CARITAS HELLAS' SOCIAL SERVICE
Statistical Data 1999
The aim of Caritas Hellas' Social Service is to help immigrants who although they
have not been granted refugee status or political asylum, they stay in Greece for humanitarian reasons.
The Social Service's work comprises:
- Filling of Intakes (about
100 a month) stating the request of the applicants; we can thus have a
first estimate of their needs, before answering or sending them to
other organizations. In 1999 we had about 400 cases from Iraq, 200 from
Africa, 100 from Kurdistan and 100 from Iran; there were also cases
form Yugoslavia, Egypt, Lebanon, Albania, Poland, Romania in small
numbers.
- Counseling: One or two sessions a week, as requested.
- Home visits, to all cases and especially those presenting health problems or
applying to request contribution to bills or rent payments.
The visits help to the right estimate of their needs. About 40 such visits monthly were considered necessary in 1999.
- Medical care:
- About 30 cases a month needing medicines
- About 20 cases a month needing medical tests for children and adults.
- About 10 cases a month needing surgical operations
- About 5 cases a month of childbirth expenses
- About 5 cases a month of dental problems
Let us mention that in several cases we had
to be on the spot either for direct collaboration with services and
doctor or just for moral support.
- Financial support:
It
is given to about 10 cases a month new comers arrived problematic
families as contribution to sent, electricity and water bills.
The service has fixed certain general criteria concerning the emergency
of needs for financial aid but it always individualizes special cases.
- Foodstuff distribution:
On certain criteria and for a certain lapse of time, 200 bags a month with foodstuff were distributed.
In our restaurant about 250 people have lunch every day.
- Cloth distribution:
Clothes are given 3 times a week to children and adults.
Usually we have about 40 adults and 15 children each time.
- Education:
Greek and English language courses were attended by 80 adults and 60 children.
- Household Equipment:
About 15 cases monthly have received household equipment
- Entertainment:
- 25 children participated in a holiday camping.
- 200 children participated in Christmas parties.
- 60 children participated to an excursion
- Shelter:
Collaboration with immigrants services and hostels to find shelter for about 20 cases for 1999.
Other Social Service's activities:
- Contacts with the Municipal Training
Center "Heridanos" in the frame of the project "Fighting against work
Market Exclusion". The above center intends to collaborate with Caritas
Hellas through the project "Social Exclusion for Refugees and
Immigrants".
- Contacts with the Professional Training Center "DELTA" in order to collaborate in Social Exclusion subjects.
Approval of the projects by the Ministry of Labor is absolutely necessary to the collaboration with the above centers.
- It is the forth year that Caritas
Hellas' Social Service is a practice center for social work students of
the "Erasmus" Project. In the frame of "Erasmus" Project we collaborate
closely with the Athens Technical School (T.E.I.), by which Caritas
Hellas' social service is supervised.
- Participation in conferences and meetings on Social Policy, welfare and immigrants subjects.
- Caritas Hellas' social worker participates, since last year, in the supervision project for professional social workers.
In social work practice, supervision is
a basic component, guiding, advising, directing the whole work; it is
also a support and preventive means against the extreme "burnout"
condition, a term meaning the sentimental exhaustion, the tiring out,
the worthless feeling, the negative self-esteem, threatening social
workers dealing with unhappy, distressing and depressing cases.
